What is flameproofing?

Flameproofing is the process of treating both natural and synthetic materials to prevent existing fires from spreading and to reduce the risk of new fires starting.  Materials that have been subjected to flameproofing treatments will not support combustion.

What is a fire retardant?

A fire retardant is a chemical compound used in flameproofing treatments.  It is a substance that can significantly delay the spread of existing fires and prevent the onset of new fires.  A fire retardant can be applied to any absorbent surface or those that allow it to “stick”.

Is Fire Retardant safe to use?

Fire retardant is a nontoxic, allergen free chemical compound that is completely safe.  Because it is a nontoxic substance, it is safe to use in areas in which there is high human traffic.  However, during the application of fire retardant, we suggest that, just like when painting, allowing for adequate ventilation and keeping it away from the face and eyes.

What needs to be flameproofed?

According to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), the Department of Buildings, and the Health Department, all decorations, drapes, curtains, scenery, and other materials used for artistic enhancement within public buildings must be noncombustible or flameproofed.

This mandate is strictly enforced and applies to all public buildings within the Metro New York area including, but not limited to hotels, theatres, public halls, restaurants, nightclubs, bars, department stores, and any other building used for public assembly.

Where is flameproofing done?

Flameproofing can save your building, your business, and not to mention lives because it can greatly reduce the spread of existing fires and prevent new ones.  However, flameproofing is legally mandated by the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), the Department of Buildings, and the Health Department.  It is also required by many insurance companies.

Why should flameproofing be done?

Flameproofing is mandated by the FDNY, the Building Department, Health Department and Insurance Carriers. However, the most important reason is to reduce the threat to life and property in case of fire and to prevent the spread of fire if one occurs.

How much does flameproofing cost?

Flameproofing, as a method of fire protection, is relatively inexpensive when compared to the cost of needless deaths and billions of dollars in damages and property losses.  The cost of flameproofing services will depend on the amount and type of material involved, which type of fire retardant is required, and the accessibility of the material.

Who can certify the flameproofing process?

Only companies that hold a Certificate of Fitness for Flameproofing from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) can certify any flameproofing services.  A legally accepted Flameproofing Affidavit must state both the company’s Flameproofing Certificate of Fitness number as well as the approved fire retardant used during the treatment.

What is the length of time a flameproofing affidavit is good for?

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) maintains that a Flameproofing Affidavit is good for one year from the date of application.  However, it is important to note that if any of the treated materials are washed or dry-cleaned, the affidavit will be voided.
